Moments to expect in the Sibiu street food tour:
Intro to Transylvania food culture
We start our tour with a short walk around Sibiu Old Town. I will tell you a couple of things about the history of my city and its gastronomic background. Then we'll go to a small artisanal shop where you can taste some local deli from a farm nearby - a true farm-to-table experience. We'll enjoy the local intimate atmosphere and debate more about Sibiu and the region.
Visit a typical farmers' food market
Visiting a Romanian food market will be a cultural shock for you. The colours, noises and smells of fresh, seasonal and homegrown products will invade your senses from all directions! I'll help you navigate this space and tell you what's on sale and the many types of cheese, cold meats and delicacies you'll see here. I'll even help you buy if you want to! Sibiu is famous for its food made by locals according to traditional, old recipes and this is the best place to see that!
we stop for a true street food classic: “mici” with mustard, grilled to perfection.
Delicious dessert
To sweeten the experience, we step into a family-run bakery, where you’ll meet the warm-hearted Saxon owner and hear about her family’s traditions. You’ll enjoy freshly baked seasonal cake, and even receive a small gift to take with you.
Optional: local "ciorba", specialty coffee or wine tasting
Any typical lunch in Romania will serve a ciorba, delicious and actually very easy to make!
Thus, optionally, if you want to extend the visit, I suggest trying the most representative "ciorba" for Sibiu area. This delicious slow cooked stew has many recipes combining veggies and meats. Each region of the country has its own varieties and recipes, but one thing is clear -
If you are a coffee lover, I suggest having one in a bohemian cafe shop. Enjoy a delicious specialty coffee (or tea) and find out how important this magical drink is for Romanians (spoiler: it's not just about the taste!).
For wine lovers, we can stop in a local wine store and try the best wines of Romania or Transylvania (a wide range of whites, roses or reds).
