Sights & Bites of Sibiu: Street Food, Ciorba & Stories

Romanians love their food and every meal is an occasion to get together with friends and family. If you're curious about what Romanians eat on a regular day, this food tour through Sibiu Old Town is the perfect way to find out. Learn about street pastries, varieties of ciorba (stew), the white cheese you see everywhere and how coffee is so important to us. And prepare for a feast!

What you need to know about the Sibiu food tour:

  • This is a private food & walking tour of Sibiu. Duration: 3 hours with a flexible starting time
  • Included: guidance from a native foodie of Sibiu and 3 food tastings. Not included: drinks
  • We start the tour in a beautiful library where I give you an introduction to Transylvania cuisine. Then we go to one of the best places in the city to try an old recipe for traditional pastries.
  • After that, we go to a small restaurant in Old Town area which serves, in my opinion, the best ciorba (local veggie and meat stew, also vegetarian friendly) and learn about the food traditions and recipes in Transylvania and Romania.
  • We'll also visit Cibin Food Market so you see local farmers selling their fresh products. You can buy from them too, and I'll help you out!
  • Finally, we finish in a specialty coffeeshop with a delicious typical treat from Sibiu. By now you'll be full, know how to eat the best food in Romania and find out more about my beautiful city!

Moments to expect in the Sibiu street food tour:

  • Intro to Transylvania food culture

We start our tour with a short walk around Sibiu Old Town. I will tell you a couple of things about the history of my city and its gastronomic background. Then we'll go to a small library where you can understand how cultural diversity influenced Transylvanian cuisine. I know you're wondering what does a library have to do with food, so let me surprise you :) And then we move to the best place in town - in my humble opinion as a native - to taste a very old recipe for a traditional Transylvanian pie.

  • Visit a typical farmers' food market

Visiting a Romanian food market will be a cultural shock for you. The colours, noises and smells of fresh, seasonal and homegrown products will invade your senses from all directions! I'll help you navigate this space and tell you what's on sale and the many types of cheese, cold meats and delicacies you'll see here. I'll even help you buy if you want to! Sibiu is famous for its food made by locals according to traditional, old recipes and this is the best place to see that!

  • 'Ciorba' explained

Any typical lunch in Romania will serve a ciorba before the main (not an appetizer!). This delicious slow cooked stew has many recipes combining veggies and meats. Each region of the country has its own varieties and recipes, but one thing is clear - it's filling, delicious and actually very easy to make! You will try the most representative for Sibiu area and see for yourself!

  • Specialty coffee & sweet treat

No lunch is complete without a coffee - and that's what we'll have in a bohemian cafe. Enjoy a delicious specialty coffee (or tea) and find out how important this magical drink is for Romanians (spoiler: it's not just about the taste!). And to top it off, I'll show you the most typical deserts in Transylvania and you can choose the one you like most!
